Riskease Home Appliances

You may not notice but there might be some appliances at your house that are dangerous due to certain reasons. Read on to know which ones and why; and how to stay safe.

How do home appliances become dangerous?

Most home appliances become hazardous due to irregular maintenance (service and cleansing) and unattended cooking appliances while on with stoves, ovens, microwaves, toasters, etc.

The dangerous home appliances:

Microwaves:

Microwaves release harmful radiations and make your food radioactive and also causes plastic containers to release harmful chemicals due to the heat. It can catch fire if you have a warped door or when the circuit boards and wiring fail. Avoid placing metal utensils in it too as metal can heat up quickly which might cause the microwave to explode. So make sure to regularly check it for damage, clean it and service it often.

Stove Tops:

Unattended stoves are another big reason for many fires. Especially when grease is involved, cooktops can easily catch fire, scorching food, clothing, and other flammable materials. If you ever encounter a grease fire, don’t throw water on the fire, which will only splatter the grease and make the fire worse. Instead, use a lid or another pot to smother the fire and turn off the burner.  Always keep your eye on it while it is on and clean it daily.

Dishwashers and Dryers:

The lint trap in dryers catches flammable material, but that’s only one part of the machine that’s a fire hazard. If lint collects in the filter and trap, there’s less airflow through the unit which can cause a buildup of heat in the vents and lint may gather on the heating coils. Keep it clean to make sure it works efficiently and safely. Also if the thermostat breaks, the dryers will keep getting hotter to no limits, undoubtedly causing a fire. Check it regularly for damaged parts and don’t use it until it is serviced and fixed. The same goes for dishwashers. A lot of heat causes the dishes to become clean. Not regularly cleaned dishwashers cause fungi and bacteria to collect which most definitely affects the hygiene of the dishes. Clean it regularly to be sure you eat off of clean utensils.

Refrigerators:

Surprisingly, refrigerators cause the most fires yearly. As refrigerators run continuously, there is a chance that their components overheat and start fires. It is important to clean the fridge inside out, regularly review the compressor to make sure it isn’t overworked and follow your model’s safety tips for ongoing maintenance to avoid shorting the electric system.

Phones:

Phone rays are harmful because they negatively affect our nervous system. At night switch the phone to aero-plane mode so that the rays don’t affect your mind while you sleep.

How to make sure you’re safe:

  • Regularly check your appliances. If there are signs of unsafe electricity like flickering lights, outlets that don’t work, or sparks when you plug in an appliance, stop using that power and call an electrician.
  • Routinely test the batteries.
  • Unplug your appliances when you’re not using them.
  • Always stay in the kitchen when cooking.
  • Always keep the appliances clean.
  • Don’t bend the wires.
  • Always maintain the appliances in an orderly manner.
  • Never leave any appliance running when no one is home.

We rely a lot on such appliances but certain steps can be taken to make sure that we, the people, (and the pets) around us stay safe.

I was inspired by a fun video that is about dangerous kitchen products which led me to bring awareness about the dangerous home appliances we have around us; I have added the link for your amusement.
